7 1: Relative Dating Geosciences LibreTexts

Absolute dating allows geologists to determine a more precise chronology of geological events, based on numerical ages or ranges. Absolute dating includes the use of radiometric dating methods, such as radiocarbon dating, potassium–argon dating, and uranium–lead dating. Luminescence dating, dendrochronology, and amino acid dating are other methods of absolute dating. Index fossil should be such as to guarantee that its presence in two separated rocks indicates their synchroneity.

Historical geology or palaeogeology is a discipline that uses the principles and methods of geology to reconstruct the geological history of Earth. Historical geology examines the vastness of geologic time, measured in billions of years, and investigates changes in the Earth, gradual and sudden, over this deep time. It also focuses on the evolution Hornet of life during different time periods in the geologic time scale. Strata on the basis of their positions in an outcrop and their fossil content. On the practical side, an index fossil should be distinctive in appearance so as to prevent misidentification, and it should be cosmopolitan both as to geography and as to rock type. In addition, its fossilized population should be sufficiently abundant for discovery to be highly probable. Such an array of attributes represents an ideal, and much stratigraphic geology is rendered difficult because of departure of the natural fossil assemblage from this ideal. Nevertheless, there is no greater testimony to the validity of fossil-based stratigraphic geology than the absolute dates made possible through radioactive measurements.

Principles of Relative Dating

Rock layers may have another rock cutting across them, like the igneous rock pictured below . To determine this, we use the law of cross-cutting relationships. The cut rock layers are older than the rock that cuts across them. Correlation can involve matching an undated rock with a dated one at another location.

Because of their unique decay rates, different elements are used for dating different age ranges. For example, the decay of potassium-40 to argon-40 is used to date rocks older than 20,000 years, and the decay of uranium-238 to lead-206 is used for rocks older than 1 million years.
